Couples Counselling
Are you tired of the same old fights? Do you feel you are drifting apart?
What is PACT Therapy?
PACT (Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy) is a cutting-edge treatment focused on attachment theory, neuroscience and arousal regulation developed by renowned psychologist relationship expert, Stan Tatkin.
It is essentially about learning what it is like to be in each other’s care. To do this we learn how to respond to your partner’s distress and to quickly de-escalate tension. The PACT framework allows each of you to gain clarity about your own thoughts and feelings and how to better understand and respond to your partner, usually not possible with normal talk therapy. As a result you will be better at being able to ‘read’ your partner and respond appropriately to eventually break destructive relationship patterns and build new ones based on true mutuality.
As your therapist I will focus on moment-to-moment shifts in your face, body and voice, and ask you to pay close attention to these as a couple. I will also at times create experiences similar to those troubling your relationship and help you work through them in real time during the session.
Like any truly useful experience though, you will get out of therapy what you put in it. In all honesty, couples counselling is most effective when both partners are present and willing.
What is PACT Therapy?
PACT based sessions are longer and more intense than regular hour-long couples sessions. Initially we will discuss your personal and family histories that have shaped your relationship beliefs and interaction styles. We will then focus on developing the ‘rules of engagement’ to keep your relationship safe and fair.
